Edo Kaaij: The Dutch Artist Blending Realism and Abstraction in Modern Portraiture

Edo Kaaij is a dutch painter, creating art that challenges viewers to decide where realism ends and abstraction begins. After a period of focusing on creating purely abstract paintings, Edo Kaaij felt the need to incorporate further aspects of realism into his paintings. This new approach slowly developed into the style of painting Edo is known for today. Edo effortlessly blends figurative and abstract styles, creating a distinctive approach to portraiture.

His current works are a combination of realism and mysticism, brought together by his abstract play of colours and palette strokes. Inspired by the female face, Edo combines traditional portraiture with thick paint and abstract textures which effortlessly integrate with his figurative subject. His work has been showcased at some of the world’s most prestigious art fairs, where it has captivated audiences and attracted collectors from across the globe.

‘When I was about 10 years old my parents bought a work from Karel Appel. His abstract art fascinated me because his seemingly random textures of paint allowed you to make your own image. Like my grandfather showed me that you don’t have to paint the sun yellow, Karel Appel’s work showed me it doesn’t have to be round either.’

Amsterdam is both home and muse to Edo Kaaij. The city’s energy, historic charm and rich mix of cultures continually fuel his creativity. Edo’s relationship with painting began in childhood, inspired by hours spent in the studio of his grandfather, Dutch naïve artist Cornelis Kaaij.

Over time, his artistic voice has shifted from the bold abstractions of his youth to the distinctive fusion of figurative forms and textured abstraction that defines his work today. His paintings capture the warmth and beauty he notices in people, expressed through layered palette-knife surfaces, luminous reflections and thoughtful use of colour.

As Edo explains, he is always searching for harmony between abstraction and representation, allowing the subject to guide the final composition. You can browse Edo Kaaij’s works on our website now, to enquire about featured paintings in this blog please email info@calkengallerycom.
