Ophelia – Maquette is a limited edition bronze sculpture by Michael James Talbot.

“Ophelia was the first piece in my Emergent Collection. When I started on this piece I was thinking of the body and spirit floating, rising above the concerns of her life, transported in a steam of dappled light and mist. The inspiration for these effects is taken from light reflecting off moving water onto adjacent surfaces, originally in the enigmatic waterways of Venice. This inspiration has led to an intense and ongoing study of patina effects giving the sculpture a liberating painterly aspect.” MJT

The Ophelia design is available in two other scales with the Ophelia third life, at 54cm tall, and a Ophelia (2/3rd Life size) version at 175cm.

    Description

    The ‘Maquette’ is the stage on from the ‘Sketch’ in Michael’s creative process. When Michael is designing a sculpture he will often create a sketch (a rough 3D sculpture to experiment with the form, balance and composition of the figure for the intended study). Once he’s happy with the sketch he’ll move on to a scaled down model of the intended piece, which he calls the maquette stage. This will again be a rough scale model but a more fleshed out version.

    We were so taken by what we saw in Michael’s studio when we came across the Emergent sketches and maquettes in their raw form, that we persuaded Michael to hone each piece so that we could cast them into these two beautiful stand-alone collections.
