“Ophelia” was the first piece in my Emergent Collection. When I started on this piece I was thinking of the body and spirit floating, rising above the concerns of her life, transported in a steam of dappled light and mist .The inspiration for these effects is taken from light reflecting off moving water onto adjacent surfaces, originally in the enigmatic waterways of Venice. This inspiration has led to an intense and ongoing study of patina effects giving the sculpture a liberating painterly aspect.
Ophelia Sketch in Cream by Michael James Talbot
The ‘Sketch’ is Michael’s method of experimenting with shape, form and balance. Just as a painter will sketch various drafts for the painting they are creating, Michael does a similar thing but in three dimensions.
We were so taken with these particular sketches, which were the early draft designs for the Emergent Collection, that we persuaded Michael to refine each of the pieces to create this wonderful stand-alone collection.
It is very rare for Michael to release the sketches or maquettes for a particular body of work so we are delighted to offer this rare opportunity as an exclusive to Calken Gallery.
